Fanfiction» Fanfics» Shadow's Choice

Authors note: All characters are copyright of SEGA, except my character Suzy the hedgehog. This is a sweet little story from Shadow's POV about how he has to make a choice between staying in Heaven or going back to Earth.

I felt the burning of the Earths atmosphere against my body and then… nothing. I woke up to a soft, familiar voice saying my name.

"Shadow…"

I opened my eyes and saw someone I never thought I'd see again.

"Maria?" I asked in disbelief.

Maria smiled, that smile I loved and missed over the years.

"Hello Shadow, I've missed you so much."

"Maria, I've missed you too, more than you can imagine." I said, hugging her. She hugged me back. How I missed that.

"Shadow, I have something important to tell you. You see since you sacrificed yourself for the entire world you have a choice. You can either stay here in Heaven, or you can go back to Earth and be with your friends."

Maria should have known what I would choose.

Maria's face was suddenly serious. "Shadow, before you choose I want you to see how your death has affected Sonic and the others."

I just blinked for a moment, and then I was in a fairly well furnished living room, Sonics place I assumed. Maria was next to me staring at the group of animals, who were sitting around and talking.

"I can't believe he's gone.", the two-tailed yellow fox boy, Tails, was saying while sitting on the sofa next to Sonic, who was sitting surprisingly still, drinking a cup of hot chocolate.

"Yeah," Amy sniffled, "I really miss him."

There was no dought they were talking about me.

"I really liked him, too." Rouge said, looking toward Knckles, "He kind of reminded me of you, Knuckles. Rough around the edges, but deep down a really sweet guy."

Knuckles blushed slightly. A loud groan interrupted everyone. It was Suzy the hedgehog Sonics twin sister. She was still in the same clothes I'd seen her on ARK, a gray-blue t-shirt, faded blue bell bottom jeans, and blue SOAP shoes, like her brothers. In fact, Suzy looked a lot like Sonic. She was tall, slim but she had a curvier figure.

She uncrossed her legs and took her feet off the coffee table, "I wish you guys would stop mopping around."

Suzy stood up and crossed her arms across her chest, "Shadows gone and that's all there is too it."

Her attitude really annoyed me (so what else was new).

With a frustrated growl, she walked over to a nearby coat rack and got a black leather motorcycle jacket, opened the door and was about to walk out when Sonic asked, "Where are you going, sis?"

His voice sounded hoarse, raspy and quivered a little, as if he'd been crying. His voice immediately saddened me.

Suzy didn't even turn around, "I'm going to blow off a little steam, okay, Spaz!" She snapped, and then she walked out the door, slamming it behind her.

From what I knew about her, Suzy gave most of her friends' nicknames.

"What got into her?" Tails asked.

"I don't know, lil' bro," Sonic rasped, "I just don't know."

I looked up a Maria, "Oh yeah, she really misses me." I said sarcastically.

"Just wait." Maria said, not taking her eyes off the closed door.

I blinked. Immediately we were in what looked like a park, it was almost dark out. Suzy stood a few feet away from us, her long wavy dirty blond hair brushing her pretty face as she walked toward a big old pine tree. The attractive blue hedgehog wore a pair of black leather gloves to replace her usual white ones (she probably had the black ones in her pocket).

In her right hand, Suzy held a single red rose. She knelt before the great old pine and laid the rose at the foot of it, right on top of a grave marked with my name.

"Shadow," Suzy said barely in a whisper, "I miss you so much. I just wish you had known how I felt about you before…" She never finished her sentence. Instead she burst into tears. She leaned on the tree, pulled her knees into her chest and sobbed uncontrollably.

Suzy looked so upset, I felt like I was going to cry. "She really did love me, didn't she?" I asked Maria, who only nodded.

"Maria," I told her, "I've made my decision. I've decided… to stay here on Earth."

Maria smiled, "I knew you'd choose to stay here. Shadow; don't forget I'll always be with you, and closer than you think. Sayonara Shadow the hedgehog."

The next thing I knew I was lying on the grass. I sat up and looked around. I was in the same park I was in just a few seconds ago. I heard soft sobs next to me.

"Suzy." I said softly, gently touching her shoulder, she jumped slightly and stared at me with wide emerald green eyes.

"Shadow?" Suzy asked softly, as I wiped away her tears, "But you're dead."

I smiled, "If I were dead, could I do this?" I leaned over and gently kissed her on the lips.

She slowly pulled away and studied at me for a moment. Then she smiled and collapsed into my arms, tears of joy streaming down her cheeks, just as tears were streaming down mine.

We kissed again and she snuggled against my chest. Suzy looked up at me again and giggled.

"What's so funny?" I asked.

She shook her head and smiled, "Nothing. Its just, you look really cute when you smile." Suzy whispered in my ear, "I love you, Shadow the Hedgehog."

I chuckled at the remark, pulled her closer to me and slid my hand under the black leather jacket on her left shoulder. "I love you, too, Suzy the Hedgehog."

Strangely, I could have sworn I felt a faint scar on the exact spot on Suzy's shoulder where Maria had been shot all those years ago.
